An essay by Lara Galinsky describes the power of moments in our lives when we are compelled by circumstances to act with a conviction we didn’t know we had. She says that these “moments of obligation,” marked by strong emotions that command us to respond, later guide our ethical commitments, like points on our moral compasses.
