Why Did We Create a Summit?

The idea of the Summit of Ohio Latinx (SOL) was born when Latinx students, staff, faculty and allies began to raise questions about the growing Latinx student population at predominantly white colleges and universities in the Midwest. How can we better mentor and resource this population? What issues are they facing on and off campus that we should be  aware of? How is their experience on campus impacting their decisions and choices they make after college? As a result of these conversations a committee of passionate individuals was formed. They created SOL in hopes of inviting other institutions to unite and discuss ways to learn from each other and make a positive change for future Latinx students.

Purpose and Goals

The purpose of Summit of Ohio Latinx (SOL): Voices Unidas is to provide a space for Latinx students and allies from different campuses to get together to discuss the upcoming presidential elections and how these elections will affect the latinx community. A few issues of concern is their access to education, healthcare, their families and friends. This summit will also include discussions on what Latinx students have faced or seen on their campuses as well as barriers, triumphs, opportunities, and resources they can take advantage of. We hope students use this summit as an opportunity to learn from each other and also to continue their great work on their respective campus.

Our goal for the summit is to empower students to take action in their community, strengthen their skills of leadership and cultural awareness, network with their peers from similar institutions, backgrounds and experiences and become an active citizen in the upcoming elections.
