Women’s March on Washington

On Saturday, January 21, 2017 in Washington D.C., a million women and feminists/allies planned “to show our strength, power and courage and demonstrate our disapproval of the new president and his values in a peaceful march.” ALL women, femme, trans, gender non-conforming and feminist others are invited to participate in the March. It is designed as “a show of solidarity to demand our safety and health in a time when our country is marginalizing us and making sexual assault an electable and forgivable norm. We align with all POC and LGBTQ causes, and we will show our support in a non-violent protest.” This is designed to be an INCLUSIVE march, and EVERYONE who supports women’s rights is welcome.

The March will begin at the Lincoln Memorial and finish outside of the White House.

The Laura C. Harris Symposium, with the theme of “Making Just Democracies?,” will sponsor charter buses to take members of our community to this March. We will leave from South Drive (between Doane Administration and Barney Davis) on Friday, January 20 at 11:59pm (essentially midnight), drive 7 hours to Bethesda (the west side of D.C.), stop for breakfast, take public transit to the March, reconvene (via public transit) at the west side “bus parking” location at 6:00ishpm, and travel back to Granville, arriving about 2:00am Sunday morning.

Students are being asked to hold their seat on the bus via a non-refundable deposit of $40; that money will be returned when the student actually gets on the bus. It will be retained if the student does not get on the bus. Faculty/Staff/Alum/Others are being asked to contribute $60 for the roundtrip bus ride. If you would like to sponsor someone who could not otherwise afford to participate, please make checks in any amount payable to Denison University and drop them off at the WGST Office, Knapp 210, or mail them in by January 10. Donations of $10, $25, or $50 are all welcome and will help all students attend in equal measure.

Questions can be addressed to the Director of WGST, Dr. Gill Wright Miller, at millerg@denison.edu, or the LCH Coordinator at caldwella@denison.edu in the Women’s and Gender Studies office, Knapp 210.
