Recently, a rather abused copy of The Strenuous Life: Essays and Addresses by Theodore Roosevelt was returned to the William Howard Doane Library.  What caught our eye (to be specific, Sarah Ray’s eye), besides the torn pages and split bindings, was the bookplate.  You know, the little pasty thing in the front cover of physical books letting you know the owner or donor of the text.
