Day Four

Not much new happened today. Same thoughts and challenges.

I was a passenger on a 20 min car ride to and from an elementary school in Newark for big brothers big sisters. So that was probably my biggest impact. I was hyper aware, however, of the food the children ate in the school cafeteria. Today they had chocolate milk and cheese quesadillas and canned peaches.

One of the fun parts of NI week for me is the chance to be creative about different aspects of my daily life. Mainly, this revolves around food for me. I’ve been working this week on new recipes with in season local food. So far this has resulted in egg cups with local eggs and local sausage for breakfast, salad with bacon and sweet potatoes for lunch, and chili for dinner (plus leftovers to avoid food waste).

Day Three Blog

Everything went better today, but I got some food issues. For my lunch, I ate two pieces of chicken instead of just vegetables. My dinner was a bowl of instant noodles, and it had a package made of paper so I can let it be recycled tomorrow. I will only eat vegetables in Curtis tomorrow. I found my friends were not willing to do the NI week with me.

Day 4 blog: Juliana

Today went really well until it didn’t. I did my usual: kept the lights off, fan unplugged, chargers unplugged, and no napkins. I washed my toothbrush off with my damp face cloth, designated for only the toothbrush, instead of running water, and finished the water in my water bottle that was from yesterday. Then, all of a sudden, I messed up.

Day 4 Blog Kate

The hardest struggle of today has been that I want some snacks. Because it is cold outside and snowing I do not want to walk to town and pretty much all of the snacks I would want come wrapped in so much plastic that it is not worth ruining my NI week over. So I have to settle on my banana today again.

Day 3 Karly

So today I had to go down to the grocery store and I brought a reusable bag with me. I was happy I did that because sometimes the cashiers only put one item in a bag and then they get a completely different plastic bag for another item when they both could have fit fine in one.

a sense of community

Colin talks about the feeling of being alone a lot. I’m wondering how many of you have started to feel that way? It definitely creeps up on me from time to time. During the week, I spend much of the day trying to figure out my no impact plan for the day, cooking and cleaning carefully to avoid waste, and then sitting in the dark downstairs while getting work done.

Day Three

Today, after lab, I went back to my room and enjoyed some ho hum time. I thought about playing a podcast but instead I just laid on my bed and eventually decided to read a few chapters of my book. I hadn’t read much of it lately, because I always feel like I should be reading my required readings.

Day 3: Im already sick of apples

Today has been exhausting. I started my daily as usual, in the dark and leaving the room by turning off all my power cords.  I grabbed breakfast which was consisted of an apple and granola (in my reusable pouch). Once my first class was over I was feeling very tired from schoolwork and etc. so I made the decision to nap.

Day 3: What do you want for Christmas?

I had to use a few paper towels today in the kitchen today. I’ve noticed that paper towels are probably my biggest source of waste. As we wrap up the next two days and beyond, I want to start exploring ways that I can cut down on my use towels. Though I am bummed that I had to use several paper towels today, it is empowering to know what I consume too much of and that there are exciting options to cut back on them.
