SYNC: The mathematics of collective synchronization

Dr. Steven Strogatz, the Schurman Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University will present “SYNC: The mathematics of collective synchronization” at the Department of Math & Computer Science departments’ Fast Talk on Thursday, February 7 at 3:00 p.m. in Olin 114.

Every night along the tidal rivers of Malaysia, thousands of male fireflies congregate in the mangrove trees and flash on and off in silent hypnotic unison. This display extends for miles along the river and occurs spontaneously; it does not require any leader or cue from the environment. Similar feats of synchronization occur throughout the natural world. Come listen to Dr. Strogatz as he introduces the simplest mathematical model of collective synchronization.

The presentation is co-sponsored by The Anderson and Doris G. Gordon Lecture Series.  Light refreshments will be served.
