$tart $mart at Denison

$tart $mart was held in the President’s Dining Room in Huffman on October 1, 2012.  Twenty-one students attended the workshop that was co-sponsored by Career Exploration and Development and the Center for Women and Gender Action.  $tart $mart was created in 2007 by the WAGE Project (Women Are Getting Even) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Lessons from Disney…

I love Disney movies. Put The Little Mermaid or Lion King on while I’m in the room, and I am seven years old again, singing every song and reciting my favorite lines along with the characters. However, as an adult woman, I now notice the sexism in many Disney movies. What is even more disturbing than the sexism present is the fact that, as a child, these movies impacted the way I thought about a woman’s role in society:

A prince rescues a princess… that is just the way it is.
