Tech: Canvas, Reproducibility, and Gemini

Canvas Updates and Support
ETS created a page on My Denison to share tips for using the new Canvas template, so you can ensure your courses are student-friendly! Check it out to find important information, such as posting your syllabus in the most effective location and how to get more support.

Reproducibility Using RStudio for Teaching and Research
Matt Lavin, Assistant Professor of Data Analytics, is offering a hands-on session (with Station pastries) tomorrow Wednesday August 14th from 9:30-10:30am in the Library room A07 (bring your laptop, RSVP here). The session invites a critical conversation about how liberal arts institutions can teach reproducibility across the curriculum, and it will provide a gentle introduction to reproducible research and code using RStudio. Gemini Relaunch and Two AI Resources of Note
Generative AI use raises privacy and data concerns. Google has plans to isolate all Denison Gemini usage to our own private tenant, adding to the security of our Google Workspace for Education community. Google has confirmed that those added Gemini protections will roll out later this fall.

Two useful resources stood out as we researched AI this summer:
1. Harvard’s AI Pedagogy Project includes a three-part AI guide in addition to numerous example assignments

2. AI Tutor Pro provides two options for students:

  • students can check their knowledge of a topic via AI generated open-ended questions that provide feedback on responses;
  • students can develop knowledge on a topic with which they are less familiar in a socratic-method style question and answer session

AI Tutor Pro, a non-profit, utilizes ChatGPT yet does not require a sign in and does not allow OpenAI to train ChatGPT with user data (AI Tutor Pro policies). In an article for the EDUCAUSE Review, Ron Owston, Professor Emeritus at York University, outlines possibilities for using Tutor AI in class for pairs or groups.
