Tidbit: Getting ready for course evaluations

Whenever colleagues invite me to observe their classes for formative feedback, I always ask them to share two or three specific aspects they’re working on and would appreciate input on. For instance, they may want to engage more students in discussion, effectively wrap up with a summary in the last five minutes, or improve how they organize board work. This focus allows me to zero in on their specific needs during the observation, ultimately providing more valuable feedback.

You can apply a similar approach with your students as course evaluations come up. Ask them to address a few particular areas where you’d like their feedback. Here’s what I recently asked my students:

  • How has the Google Document Daily Schedule impacted your learning experience, and how could it be improved?
  • Were the weekly WebAssign exercises beneficial, and how might they be adjusted for better results?
  • Should the course continue with take-home quizzes, return to in-class timed tests, or use a mix of both?

By seeking targeted feedback on specific course elements, you can gather beneficial insights to elevate the learning experience for future students. Don’t miss this chance to refine your teaching and make a lasting impact!
