Lockdown Browser and Revision History: Two tools for assessment validity

As midterms approach, we’ve heard from many faculty thinking about how to ensure the validity of exams and assessments. Beyond laying the groundwork through shared trust and clear expectations, we support two tools that help keep students focused on producing work without using web searches or AI:

Lockdown Browser keeps students “locked in” to your assessment (essay, quiz) in Canvas and does not allow internet access. There are two ways to use it:

  1. By reserving a computer lab, where the software is pre-loaded
  2. By having students download the software on their personal laptop

Our MyDenison page provides details on both.

Revision history works with Google Docs and Google Slides to allow faculty to see how a student creates their work by playing it back (like a recording), by noting areas where information is cut and pasted, and by providing details such as time spent working, total revisions, number of work sessions, and unusual patterns.
