Teaching – ChatGBT webinar recording, some resources, and a warning

It was good to see so many attendees at the recent CfLT webinar on ChatGPT by Dr. Tim Lauitano. If you couldn’t attend, you can find a recording here. Please note this is the Denison CfLT YouTube channel, so be sure you are logged into myDenison to access it.

This NYT article – Don’t Ban ChatGPT in Schools. Teach With It – argues that trying to police chatbots will be an ever-increasing game of whack-a-mole. Instead of policing, the article suggests ways to use ChatGPT in your classes, including an extensive list from the teaching blog Ditch That Textbook. Please keep in mind the issues with data privacy as mentioned below. This website from Montclair State University offers some practical responses to ChatGPT. Remember, you have free access to the NYT through Denison.

Finally, a word of WARNING about using ChatGPT in the classroom: some have suggested leaning into ChatGPT and having students use it in the classroom. While this sounds like a great way to embrace this technology, students must provide a valid email and cell phone number to sign up for ChatGPT. So this innocent-sounding exploration could lead to questions about data privacy for our students. Please keep this in mind as you explore this new technology.
