Here is a quick look at some of the things discussed at our Teaching Matters session on Creating Classroom Cultures:
Do you know what kind of culture works for your teaching style and learning goals? Erin Henshaw explained how she strives to create a warm, welcoming environment. Meanwhile, Heather Poole and Heather Rhodes both shared their strategies for getting students to co-create “dynamic” and “motivated” classroom communities. Struggling with getting students to talk to one another? Charles St-Georges has a cool way of initiating class conversations in his language class by focusing early discussions on things student’s find fun and relevant. Are things not quite going the way you want? Time to shake things up? Jessica Rettig suggested the value of introducing “disruptions” to the classroom in order to overhaul established patterns and reinvigorate student engagement. Illustrating this approach, Ross Etherton shared how he took his entire class on a walk to reset the dynamics of the classroom. |
