Tech Tip from ETS: A new Canvas whiteboard option and more- Lucid Integration

Were you unhappy when Google ended Jamboard? We now have a built in alternative in Canvas through Lucid. If you would like to create a whiteboard in Canvas, all versions of the “rich content editor” (for example when you create an assignment or a page) include a Lucid tool, as shown below:

To create your whiteboard, create a new assignment or page in the module where you want it. Then:

  1. In your module, click on the assignment/page link–> edit.
  2. Click on the Lucid tool (see image above). On the “Embed Lucid Document” page, click “New.”
  3. Lucid Spark–> Blank board–> Create board
  4. Choose the editing settings for your students (edit, comment only, view only).
  5. You will see the gray board populate the rich text box.
  6. Below the box, choose any settings. If you make the board an assignment, you can assign points, grade categories, and due dates. If you make the board a page, it will not provide any grading options.
  7. Save your settings and publish when you are ready for students to use it.

With the square icon on the left (see below), students can add a sticky note with text. Unless you set the board to anonymous (under “board settings” from the three lines next to the board title), the note will show the student name.

The three dots in the upper right of the board will allow you and your students to set a timer, to start a voting session (on which note, comment, or other object they like best, for example), to go into private mode (their sticky notes are not visible to each other so that they don’t influence one another), or to make comments on each other’s posts:

Here is an option to watch a video of embedding Lucid into Canvas.
