Tech: Number Your Slides and Use A Template

Have you ever watched a slide presentation and had a question about a particular slide? When you are able to refer to a slide number for your question, the presenter can quickly find it. Referring to a slide number rather than a slide title is also much easier for students as they take notes. Yet, too often we neglect to include slide numbers because we are focused on content. While you can simply insert slide numbers using InsertSlide Numbers, it can be easier to make your own slide deck template that includes numbers.

To create a template in Google slides: View→Theme builder

To apply a style to all slides, click the “Theme” slide and adjust for font type, color, size (for any/all levels), insert slide number, add a header, footer, or log. You can also change the background color, use an image for the background, or change any other aspect and it will be applied to the entire deck (unless you change any of the “Layout” slides below the theme slide and use them). Don’t want a number on your title slide? Click on the first slide under the layouts section and delete the “#”.

Save your formatted (but empty) slide deck with a name like “Template_your name” and each time you want to create a new deck, you can make a copy of your template and adjust as needed.
