Align AI Policies with Learning Goals

As we approach the new semester, it’s important to reflect on how your course documents (syllabus, assignment sheets, etc.) communicate clearly to students the rules around AI use in your classes as well as the relationship between those rules and the course learning goals. Here’s my advice: 

AI Policy: Articulate a clear AI policy in your syllabus, and if it makes sense to do so, articulate an AI policy in each assignment sheet. 

Learning Goals: Design your AI policy (or policies) around your learning goals. What are the skills you want students to practice in each assignment? How might AI undermine or enhance students’ abilities to learn those skills? 

Communicate Learning Goals to Students: Throughout the semester, remind students of the learning goals for various activities and assignments and talk with them about the relationship between AI use and their ability to learn those skills.
