Setting Up Automatic System and Software Updates

Software updates are like oil changes for your car: critical maintenance to  keep your digital systems running in an optimal state. We all know how easy it can be to put off system updates–they take up valuable computer time and can be snoozed with a single click. However, it’s important to keep up with updates for Google Chrome, your downloaded apps and software, and your operating system as updates often include bug fixes, performance and stability improvements, and patches that fix security vulnerabilities.

To easily keep up with these updates, try the following:

  • Turn on automatic updates

    • Follow the steps for Mac users and PC users to keep your operating system updated

  • Start your software updates at the end of the day so they install overnight

  • If you’re concerned about potential data loss, double check that you’ve got your data backed up before starting the update

Your personal phones, tablets, and other devices are also at risk. Enabling automatic updates and installing updates when prompted will  keep all your devices in good working order and to protect your accounts and data–and that of your students–from potential malicious actors.
