| Many of our CfLT conversations last year explored the growing importance of helping students to understand and embrace the value of the learning they’re doing in our classes. In this week’s read, Christina M. Schmidt of Cornell University explains what happens when faculty start by asking themselves, “Five years from now, what do you hope a former student carries forward from your course, beyond content knowledge?”
As we get our fall courses up and running, finding new ways to make learning goals explicit to our students is worth the time and effort. As Schmidt says, “Most faculty still hold real authority over what happens inside their own courses, and we should use it while we have it. No one is better positioned to shape the future than we are. The researchers, lawmakers and leaders of the next generation sit in our classrooms now, and what we teach them to value, they carry into the world.” |
