Why students won’t read

With all the formalities of the first few weeks behind us, hopefully, your classes have settled into a routine of productive learning. How is the reading going? Often we get frustrated that students are not doing the reading we assign; reading that is critical to course discussion and understanding. The short articles Why Students Won’t Read—and What to Do about It by Chris Hakala and Want Students to Do the Reading? Assign Tasks, Not Texts by Noman Eng give concrete suggestions for overcoming this common concern.

Are your students reading nonfiction texts? Please look at 18 Warm-Up Activities to Engage Students Before They Read Nonfiction Texts from the New York Times.

When accessing the New York Times online for the first time, you will need to set up an account to access Denison’s campus-wide subscription. This account will allow you to access the New York Times on and off campus.

  1. Navigate to www.accessnyt.com
  2. Search for and select Denison. (You will be redirected to the NYT registration page.)
  3. Click “Create Account” and complete the fields — you must use your @denison.edu email.
  4. Verify your account (you will receive a confirmation email).
