Tidbit- To understand AI, you need to engage with AI

I recently facilitated an AI-focused session for the GLCA (resources, including the recording, can be found here). Out of nearly 300 registrants, about 60% reported being very familiar or somewhat familiar when asked to rate their knowledge of generative AI based on exposure through reading, podcasts, webinars, etc. Interestingly, 63% of registrants reported no experience or limited experience using generative AI such as ChatGPT, Bing, or Bard.

This highlights a significant gap. To understand this new technology and its implications in our classes (students will be using it), we need to engage with it. This holds true regardless of whether we plan to incorporate it into our teaching methods.

Dr. Cynthia Alby at Georgia College and State University offers a compelling resource of AI-driven prompts tailored for educators. These Cut and Paste AI prompts include:

  • Create clearer explanations that are a good fit for my audience
  • Provide good examples to help students better understand a concept
  • Look for patterns in results from “tickets out the door” etc.
  • Design a simple diagnostic quiz
  • Create interactive activities
  • Design Writing Prompts
I encourage you to leverage Dr. Alby’s insights as a starting point to familiarize yourself with this new technology. And remember, there are several upcoming workshops on AI and the Center’s weekly drop-in session, which I will share in a separate post later today.
