Tidbit: But What if You Can’t Quit Your ‘Dead-End Job’?

In my role as director, I subscribe to a large number of newsletters, listservs, and blogs. So, my inbox sees a lot of traffic. One article titled But What if You Can’t Quit Your ‘Dead-End Job’? recently stood out. It brought to mind a note I received from a senior colleague soon after I secured tenure back in 2007. Their message (humorously?) read:

I hear congratulations are in order: you’re officially in a dead-end job!

At the time, I didn’t think much of their quip. However, the sentiment has taken on new significance in light of the recent global pandemic and rising concerns about faculty burnout. Though I initially expected the article to discuss burnout, it surprised me by offering solid advice on ‘managing yourself.’ In particular, there is a set of introspective questions designed to align personal strengths with the ever-evolving needs of institutions. I found it worthwhile; I hope you do, too.
