Chair’s Workshop on Faculty Mentoring and Provost Coplin’s Charge to Department
Chairs Frank Hassebrock (2015 Director, Center for Learning and Teaching) and Susan Garcia (Associate Provost) led a workshop on February 18, 2015 on Building An Effective Mentoring Network. It provided a review of traditional and emerging models of mentoring, with an emphasis on the Mutual Mentoring model as developed by Mary Dean Sorcinelli (Distinguished Scholar in Residence, Weisman Center for Leadership, Mount Holyoke College). One focus of the workshop was consideration of the opportunities and challenges in applying a mutual mentoring model at Denison, and specifically how this model can inform the re-conceptualization of Departmental mentoring plans. In particular, we explored how future mentoring plans need to address multiple mentoring contexts (teaching, scholarship, community participation and leadership, and work/life balance) and mentoring across one’s career stages (new, navigating the tenure process, post-tenure and mid-career, and later-career and pre-retirement).
In Provost Coplin’s charge, she asked that:
“Building on what you learned on February 18, I would like each of you and your department to reflect on how mentoring can best be effected, and to prepare a draft of a revised plan or conceptualization of mentoring to share and workshop with other chairs at a chairs meeting early next fall. Incorporating feedback from your peers, you will then complete a department mentoring plan or concept to be submitted to the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs at the start of the spring semester, at which time implementation will begin.”
