Abstract:

Generative AI impacts skills beyond text generation with interfaces that allow students to use AI to assist them with reading, note-taking, research, tutoring, and even feedback. With the rise of multimodal AI, our students will soon be able to interact with synthetic voices, videos, and even avatars that mimic human beings. All of these factors mean that it is crucial for us to teach students AI literacy. The Department of Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Mississippi has piloted many types of AI tools with writing students and has a tentative framework in place that emphasizes thoughtful engagement with this emerging technology for both faculty and students.

What this session covered:
*A brief overview of what multimodal AI is currently capable of doing
*Normalizing open disclosure of AI usage
*Making learning transparent when AI is used through reflection
*Use cases for students to engage with AI and help them develop their AI literacy
*Brief demonstrations of AI-assisted tools for writing, reading, and research
