Constructing Your Personal Advising Philosophy

It is important to think through our own goals as advisers as a part of setting expectations for ourselves and our students. The “Situational Model of Academic Advising Styles” has four quadrants (Guardian, Accountant, Endorser, Mentor) and recognizes that we shift among versions of these different approaches depending on the needs of particular students at different stages of their Denison careers. Our advising approaches can sometimes also shift depending on our own time limitations.

It is also important to think through the connections between advising and teaching, including different strategies for encouraging students to embrace the uncertainties, challenges, and possibilities that college offers in comparison to their high school experiences. When constructing your philosophy of advising, it might be helpful try summarizing it in one sentence—such as, “I am a compass, not a map”—as a way to remind ourselves of our goals and limitations as advisers.
