When I was five, my family moved to New York City, and we eventually settled in Ohio when I was 14. Hi everyone! My name is Abzal, and I’m a junior at Denison University, studying Global Commerce and Economics. I was born and raised in Kazakhstan and moved to the U.S. for college. Having never been to the States before, I experienced culture shock and discovered so many new things.
As the only student from Kazakhstan at Denison, I didn’t have the typical international student experience where you bond closely with others from your home country.

Denison may seem quiet over the summer but don’t let it fool you, there are a number of students on campus doing important summer research! One of these students is Aniket Gauba, a rising Junior studying Computer Science and Physics. We had the chance to hear from him about his research and how he feels it will help him going forwards. This was the second year for the Exploring the World Photo Contest. The category was People and Places, giving students the freedom to submit photos from their time off-campus featuring landscapes and/or people. This year we received twenty-two submissions from students’ experiences worldwide! The top 10 finalists were chosen by a faculty member with photography expertise and displayed in the Center for Global Programs.
